As they left the inn, Britt considered asking Amos if he’d like to come up and see her place in Silver Creek. But that was a huge step she wasn’t sure she was ready to take. Electricity hummed in the air simply with his hand wrapped around hers. There was no denying they’d end up in bed if she invited him up.

Not that there was anything wrong with sex between two consenting adults. But she was still getting to know Amos. Though she had to admit what she’d seen of him so far, she liked very much.

They passed an ice cream shop, and she experienced a sudden urge for sorbet. “Would you like—”

The ringing of his phone silenced the question. It was a strange ringtone, very distinctive, but one she couldn’t quite place.

Amos released her hand, his dark brows pulling together. “Give me a sec.”

“Hello.” He listened for several seconds.

Britt studied the list of flavors on the windows of the ice cream shop.

“Right now?” Amos glanced at Britt. “Sure, I can be there in thirty.”

Whoever was on the other end of the call did most of the talking. Though Amos kept the phone close to his ear, Britt could hear the deep rumble of a man’s voice.

Just knowing it wasn’t another woman had her relaxing.

“I’m sorry.” He shoved the phone into his pocket. “Family emergency.”

“I didn’t realize you have family in town.”

“Parents.” He shifted, looking uncomfortable, so she let it go.

“Totally understand. When I lived in the same town as my folks, my mom expected me to come running each time she called.” Britt’s lips twisted in a wry smile.

A look of regret crossed Amos’s face. “I wasn’t ready for our day to end.”

“Them’s the breaks.” Britt shrugged and forced a lighthearted tone.

“Do you like art galleries?”

Britt blinked. First, chess. Now, art galleries. Amos Lee was turning out to be a true Renaissance man.

“I love them.”

“The Mirus Gallery has a solo exhibition tomorrow that’s free and open to the public.” A watchful look filled his gaze. “The artist is a pop urban artist. Her work is very intriguing. Want to go with me?”

“You do realize this will be the third day in a row we’ve seen each other.”

He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and his voice was just as gentle when he spoke. “Is that a problem?”

“Not for me.” Britt studied him with a forthright gaze. “Do you want me to meet you there?”

“I’ll pick you up at six.” He paused. “By the front door of Silver Creek.”

She understood. If he picked her up out front, he wouldn’t have to pay for parking. “That’ll work.”

They covered several more blocks and were soon back in front of the Archer Tower apartments, where they’d met earlier for the tour. Britt put a hand on his arm. “I’ll walk from here.”

“I can drop you off.”

“Not necessary.” She reached up and brushed his lips with hers. “Your family is waiting.”

He kissed her this time. By the time he released her, Britt’s breath came in short puffs.
